</span><p> <span style="font-size:85%;">They were hit by the trailer, carrying a county council mobile display unit, when it became detached from a van in Codsall, Staffs, on Friday. </span></p><p> <span style="font-size:85%;">Police and fire crews had to lift the trailer so paramedics could reach one of the 14-year-olds after the accident in Lane Green Road at 1540 BST. </span></p><p> <span style="font-size:85%;">She was airlifted to hospital in Wolverhampton. separated from a vehicle and hit a group of people.</b> </span><p> <span style="font-size:85%;">Sarah Damen, 37, was walking on the pavement in Bere Regis in Dorset on Friday when the crash happened. </span></p><p> <span style="font-size:85%;">Mrs Damen, a mother of three young children aged five, four and two, died at the scene. </span></p><p> <span style="font-size:85%;">Another woman, Suzanne Gee, and her daughter, Rebekah, three, are recovering from their injuries. The driver was arrested and bailed. <!-- E SF --> </span></p><p> <span style="font-size:85%;">The 44-year-old man, from Wareham, had been arrested in suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving. style="font-family:sans-serif;font-size:85%;">Stephen Hayfield, 39, of Hallen, near Avonmouth, died from multiple injuries in November 2000, after the trailer became detached from its tractor. </span></p><p> <span class="body" style="font-family:sans-serif;font-size:85%;">Bristol Crown Court heard on Tuesday the trailer was put on the roads in a dangerous condition. </span></p><p> <span class="body" style="font-family:sans-serif;font-size:85%;">The owners of the trailer, Somerset-based agricultural contractors Dennis Clothier and Sons; one of the firm's directors, Julian Clothier, 33, of Chewton Mendip; and farm worker Simon Burrows, 27, of Bath, all deny the manslaughter of Mr Hayfield. </span></p><p> <!-- GENInlineBOX --> <span class="body" style="font-family:sans-serif;font-size:85%;">Mr Hayfield was in his car sheltering from the rain while on a fishing trip in the Mendip Hills when the vehicle was hit by the trailer. </span></p><p> <span class="body" style="font-family:sans-serif;font-size:85%;">The court heard farm worker Mr Burrows had been trying to tow the trailer - loaded with straw and weighing the equivalent of two double-decker buses - up a steep country lane. </span></p><p> <span class="body" style="font-family:sans-serif;font-size:85%;">As the tractor struggled up the hill, the hitch mechanism connecting the tractor to the trailer failed under the strain. </span></p><p> <span class="body" style="font-family:sans-serif;font-size:85%;">Paul Garlick, prosecuting, said: "He (Mr Hayfield) must have seen the trailer careering down the hill towards him and he decided to abandon his car. </span></p><p> <span class="body" style="font-family:sans-serif;font-size:85%;">"Sadly that decision to abandon his car cost him his life." </span></p><p> <span class="body" style="font-family:sans-serif;font-size:85%;">Mr Hayfield stumbled as he tried to escape and was struck by the trailer as it veered towards him. </span></p><p> <span class="body" style="font-family:sans-serif;font-size:85%;"><b>'Obvious' defects</b> </span></p><p> <span class="body" style="font-family:sans-serif;font-size:85%;">Mr Garlick said all three defendants were guilty of "gross negligence" because they should have known that the hitch mechanism on the tractor and trailer was "badly worn" and that there was a "real risk" it could become detached. </span></p><p> <span class="body" style="font-family:sans-serif;font-size:85%;">Mr Burrows was the regular driver of the unit and had attached the trailer himself on the morning of style="font-family:sans-serif;font-size:85%;">Mr Burrows even telephoned Mr Clothier to ask for help after the first failed attempt, but had decided to have another go while he was waiting. Falmouth. </b> </span><p> <span style="font-size:85%;">A boat was being hauled up the slipway when the accident happened at about 1915 on Sunday. </span></p><p> <span style="font-size:85%;">The trailer became detached and hit Piran Osborne, of St Newlyn East, Cornwall, who was sitting on a wall. </span></p><p> <span style="font-size:85%;">The Health and Safety Executive has been informed, and an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident will be carried out. </span></p><p> </p><p> <span style="font-size:85%;">The boy's eight-year-old brother, who was also sitting on the wall, was taken to the Royal Cornwall Hospital in Truro with minor injuries. </span></p><p> <span style="font-size:85%;">The accident happened at a 2.5m-wide public slipway outside the main has somehow become detached and come down the slipway. </span></p><p> <span style="font-size:85%;">"The five-year-old was sitting on a wall with his brother who was also struck by the boat but received only minor injuries." </span></p><p> <span style="font-size:85%;">Roger Graffy, managing director of Mylor Yacht Harbour, said: "A family has been ruined and my heart goes out to them. accident, a coroner has said.</b> </span><p> <span style="font-size:85%;">Wendy Smith, 33, died while out walking with her two young daughters in Halton Lea Gate, near Haltwhistle, four years ago. </span></p><p> <span style="font-size:85%;">The inquest had heard she saved her two daughters by throwing them over a wall before she was killed. </span></p><p> <span style="font-size:85%;">The trailer, owned by Woolsingham based Fletcher Marquees, became detached from a lorry while being towed through the village in September 1999. </span></p><p> <span style="font-size:85%;">Ms Smith was crushed against a wall when the trailer mounted a pavement as she walked with her two young daughters. </span></p><p> <span style="font-size:85%;">The force of the impact demolished a stone wall by the roadside and a telegraph pole. </span></p><p> <span style="font-size:85%;">Ms Smith suffered multiple injuries and died soon afterwards in the Cumberland Infirmary in Carlisle. </span></p><p> <span style="font-size:85%;">The coroner, delivering his verdict in Carlisle on Friday morning, criticised the lack of maintenance of the trailer and said Ms Smith's death could have been prevented. </span></p><p> <span style="font-size:85%;">He also called for the introduction of MOT style testing of all lightweight trailers and caravans. </span></p><p> <!-- E BO --> <span incident happened when the trailer became detached from a green Toyota Hilux on Station Road in Old Dalby at about 0750 BST on Friday. </span></p><p> <span style="font-size:85%;">A Leicestershire that became detached from the vehicle that was pulling it.</b> </span><p> <span style="font-size:85%;">The victim, believed to be in her 30s, was walking on the pavement in Bere Regis, Dorset, on Friday. </span></p><p> <span style="font-size:85%;">A red Land Rover had been travelling along the C6 Southbrook road to Wool in the village when its trailer detached, colliding with the group. </span></p><p> <span style="font-size:85%;">The 44-year-old male driver of the Land Rover, from Wareham, has been arrested. <!-- E SF --> </span></p><p> <span style="font-size:85%;">Police said he was being held on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving. </span></p><p> <span style="font-size:85%;">The victim, who has not been identified but was from Bere Regis, died at the scene. </span></p><p> <span style="font-size:85%;">The other woman and her child were taken to Dorset County Hospital where they were described as being in a stable, non-life-threatening condition. <!-- E BO
